Got a question about preparing, protecting or maintaining your exterior timber? Here are answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often.

What is the best oil for exterior timber?

For most exterior timber projects, Evolution Exterior Oil provides deep-penetrating, non-film-forming protection against moisture, weather and UV exposure. It is suitable for decks, outdoor furniture, cladding and other exterior timber, with six natural colourtones plus Clear available.

Which Evolution Exterior Oil colour should I choose?

Choose a colourtone that complements your timber and the look you want to achieve. Evolution Exterior Oil is available in Ironbark, Western Red Cedar, Merbau, Jarrah, Blackbutt and Tasmanian Oak, plus Clear. We recommend testing your chosen colour on a small area first, as the final appearance will vary depending on the timber.

Can I use Clear Exterior Oil?

Yes. Evolution Exterior Oil Clear can be used when you want to maintain a more natural appearance with regular recoating, or allow the timber to silver naturally over time while still receiving protection. On decks and other high-traffic areas, we also recommend a final coat of Clear over a colourtone during the initial application to improve abrasion resistance.

How do I prepare a deck before oiling?

Your deck should be clean, dry and properly prepared before oiling. Depending on its condition, this may involve cleaning, removing green growth, restoring greyed timber or sanding. New timber may also need time to weather before the first application.

Do I need to remove an existing finish?

If the existing finish prevents the new oil from penetrating the timber, it will need to be removed. Film-forming coatings such as paint or varnish should be sanded back to provide a clean, absorbent surface before applying Evolution Exterior Oil.

What should I use on grey or weathered timber?

Use Silver Timber Restorer to help restore the natural colour of greyed or weathered timber and prepare it for further treatment. Once restored and fully dry, the timber can be prepared as required before applying your exterior oil.

How do I remove moss or green growth from a deck?

Use Green Growth Remover to treat moss, algae and green growth. Apply it to the dry surface, allow it work for about 10–15 minutes, then remove the residue with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow the timber to dry completely before further treatment.

How many coats of Exterior Oil do I need?

For the initial application of Evolution Exterior Oil, allow for 2–3 applications, depending on the timber and its absorbency. For colourtone finishes on decks and other high-traffic areas, we recommend making the final application Clear to improve abrasion resistance.

How often should I recoat my deck?

There isn't one fixed interval for every deck. Exposure, weather, traffic and timber type all affect how quickly protection is depleted, so inspect your deck regularly and apply a renewal coat when required rather than waiting for the timber to become badly weathered.

Can I apply a maintenance coat without sanding the whole deck?

Yes, provided the existing finish is sound and the timber is properly cleaned and prepared. One advantage of a penetrating oil system is that routine maintenance should not require the entire deck to be sanded back each time. Sand only where the condition of the surface requires it.
