Becky — 60-Year-Old Mountain Cottage Floor Restoration
“These floors were last restored by me 20 years ago, so they were well overdue for another clean-up. I used a Makita orbital sander with 40-grit pads — six hours of sanding! — followed by a quick pass with 120 grit. Even after vacuuming, the tack cloth made a huge difference in removing the fine dust.
Once prepped, I brushed on Whittle Waxes Evolution Hardwax Oil (Satin). The product was extremely easy to use and went on beautifully. After 24 hours I lightly hand-sanded with 220 grit before the second coat, again using a tack cloth to keep the surface spotless.I
’m a painter by trade so I’m comfortable with the process, but I was still amazed at how great the finish turned out. The floor has come up warm, rich and smooth — a massive improvement on what I started with.
This cottage still has its original floorboards from the 1960s, and thanks to Evolution Hardwax Oil they now look fresh again and are protected for years to come. I’ll be tackling the lounge room next!”

“I’ll never use anything else for interiors.”
“I’ve hand-built my accommodation here in the Snowy Mountains entirely from recycled materials over the past 35 years. In that time, I’ve tested every ‘natural’ wood finish I could find. About seven years ago, I started using Evolution Hardwax Oil — and I’ll never use anything else for interiors.
In these photos you can see our kitchen — the Australian Cedar cabinetry and Ironbark bridge-beam floors all finished with Evolution Classic. It’s incredibly easy to apply (I rub it on and off with a cloth), and the finish just gets more beautiful with each coat. Everyone who visits comments on how it looks — and even how it smells.
I’d never again buy toxic products. Everything about our place — from the timbers to the finishes — is about protecting this stunning environment for the generations who follow.”

“Evolution Satin… the icing.”
“With this project, I had no choice — my wife presented me with a pile of scrap timber that, I was told, was once the family cot. It had been thrown out in the weather years ago and only recently rediscovered as the need arose once again. There was no real option but to restore it.
The cot was first used in 1927 for my wife’s mother and her brother, then for her own family of four in 1951, ours of two in 1991, and now for our forthcoming grandchild in 2025.
Predominantly teak with dowel joints, several slats and rails needed replacing. Pink gum was milled for the new pieces, and epoxy was used to reinforce the timber and dowel joints. One mismatched front member with the brass slide was stained with a watered-down Feast Watson Jarrah stain to even out the colour.
Having had great success with Whittle Waxes products in the past, I chose Evolution Satin Hardwax Oil to give the cot a hard-wearing, attractive finish. It was a great choice — one I’ll always keep in my arsenal.I
t’s good to show that some things are far too precious to be considered firewood.”
