One of the questions we’re often asked is: how long will a hardwax oil finish last before it needs recoating?

As a general guide, a well-applied hardwax oil finish can give you at least 5–7 years of protection before a maintenance coat may be needed – and with the right care, it can continue looking beautiful for many years.

But there isn’t one answer that applies to every floor or piece of furniture.

A quiet bedroom floor has a very different life from a busy kitchen. A dining table is subjected to different wear from a bookcase. Pets, cleaning routines, foot traffic and regular maintenance can all influence how quickly a finish wears.

So, what makes the biggest difference?

1. How much use does the surface get?

Traffic is probably the most obvious factor.

Hallways, kitchens, entrances and other high-traffic areas naturally experience more wear than bedrooms or less frequently used spaces. Dirt and grit carried in on shoes can also act as fine abrasives, gradually wearing the finish.

The same principle applies to furniture. A dining table, kitchen benchtop or frequently used desk will generally work much harder than a cabinet or decorative piece.

This doesn't necessarily mean the whole surface will need recoating at the same time. One of the advantages of maintaining a hardwax-oiled surface is that you can keep an eye on the areas receiving the most wear and deal with them before the finish becomes excessively worn.

2. How you clean it matters

Regular cleaning can actually help extend the life of your finish – provided you use the right products.

For timber floors, one of the simplest things you can do is sweep or vacuum regularly. Small particles of sand and grit can act like sandpaper underfoot, gradually scratching and wearing the surface.

3. What about pets?

Dogs and cats are part of the family in many homes, but claws, muddy paws and the extra dirt that comes with them can mean more wear on a timber floor.

Again, regular vacuuming or sweeping helps. Removing grit before it gets repeatedly walked across the floor is one of the easiest ways to reduce unnecessary abrasion.

And don't panic over every little mark. Timber is a natural material designed to be lived with, and some signs of everyday life are inevitable.

4. Maintenance can make a big difference

You don't necessarily need to wait until your hardwax oil finish is worn out before doing something about it.

If a floor or other hardwax-oiled surface begins looking a little dull or tired, Wax Polish can be used to refresh it. It enhances the appearance of the timber while providing a durable, water-repellent, non-slip finish and can help remove or lessen fine scratches and marks.

Wax Polish is available in Matte, for surfaces protected with Evolution Matte Hardwax Oil, and Regular, for the higher sheen levels.

Think of this as preventative maintenance rather than waiting until the finish has deteriorated to the point where more extensive work is required.

So, when does your timber actually need recoating?

Don't rely solely on the calendar – look at the timber.

If the surface is still looking good, performing well and being maintained correctly, there is no reason to recoat simply because a certain number of years have passed.

Conversely, areas receiving particularly heavy use may benefit from attention sooner.

The 5–7 year timeframe is therefore a useful guide rather than a hard-and-fast rule. How the surface is used and, importantly, how it is cared for will have a major influence on the life of the finish.

The simple recipe for a longer-lasting finish

It really comes down to a few straightforward habits:

• Remove dust and grit regularly before it can abrade the finish.
• Use Floor Care to clean and replenish hardwax-oiled timber floors.
• Use Furniture Care for furniture and other timber surfaces.
• Refresh with Wax Polish when the finish starts looking dull or develops fine marks.
• Keep an eye on high-use areas rather than waiting until the finish is badly worn.
