How Do I Keep My Timber Floor Looking New?
By Giles Whittle-Herbert, Whittle Waxes
A beautiful timber floor can look great for years, but like any natural surface, it needs a little care. The good news is that keeping your floor looking its best doesn't have to be difficult or time-consuming.
A few simple habits, the right cleaning products and occasional maintenance can make a big difference.
1. Vacuum regularly
Dust, sand and grit are among the biggest causes of everyday wear on timber floors. As people walk across the floor, these tiny particles can act like sandpaper.
Regular vacuuming with a soft floor attachment, or sweeping with a soft broom, helps prevent fine scratches and keeps the surface looking good.
2. Use mats where they matter
Place good-quality mats at external entrances to catch dirt, sand and moisture before they reach your timber floor. This is particularly important in busy households, especially with children and pets.
3. Protect your floor from furniture
Fit felt pads underneath chairs, tables and other furniture to prevent scratches when they're moved. Check and replace the pads occasionally, particularly on dining chairs that get plenty of use.
4. Clean with the right products
Avoid harsh household cleaners and excessive water, which can damage timber finishes.
For floors finished with hardwax oil, Whittle Waxes Floor Care is designed to clean and maintain the surface. It also leaves a thin, replenishing protective layer, helping to keep the floor looking its best.
Used with a microfibre spray mop, routine floor cleaning really couldn't be easier. The mop delivers a controlled amount of cleaning solution, avoiding unnecessary soaking.
5. Give tired floors a refresh
Even a well-maintained floor may eventually begin to look a little dull, particularly in high-traffic areas.
Whittle Waxes Wax Polish is ideal for refreshing hardwax-oiled floors, helping to restore their appearance and reduce the visibility of fine marks and scratches. It's a simple way to give a tired finish a new lease of life without immediately resorting to sanding and refinishing.
