It’s one of the questions we’re asked all the time: do I really need to sand between the first and second coats of hardwax oil?

The short answer is yes – but we’re talking about a very light sand, not sanding the finish back.

Why sand between coats?

After applying the first coat of hardwax oil, some of the timber fibres can become slightly raised. Even if the surface looked beautifully smooth before you started, it may feel a little rough once that first coat has dried.

Light sanding removes these raised fibres and helps create a smooth, even surface ready for the second coat.

When should I sand?

Apply your first coat thinly and allow it to dry overnight.

Once it is dry, lightly sand the surface before applying the second coat. The important word here is lightly – you’re simply smoothing the surface, not trying to remove the first coat.

Remove all sanding dust before applying your second thin coat.

What grit should I use?

This depends on what you’re finishing.

Furniture, benchtops and cabinetry:
Lightly sand with 320 grit before applying the second coat.

Timber floors:
Lightly sand with a 220 grit screen before applying the second coat.

What happens if I don't sand between coats?

You may still get a good result, but any fibres raised after the first coat can remain in the finished surface. This can leave the timber feeling slightly rougher and prevent you from achieving the beautifully smooth finish you’re after.

Considering how little sanding is required, it’s a step we recommend not skipping.
