Restoring the Natural Beauty of Our Home: A Staircase Transformation

After 26 years in our previous home north of Melbourne, an organic Alistair Knox-inspired mudbrick house filled with timber, slate, and sunbaked bricks, my wife and I decided it was time to downsize. In 2021, as empty nesters, we made the permanent move to Noosa, where we had owned a holiday home for years.

After searching properties from Peregian Beach to Tewantin, we settled on a house in the gated estate of Noosa Springs. Although it had a beautiful view of Lake Weyba, we quickly realized the home had lost much of its original charm during a massive renovation in 2013. Gone were any natural wood elements—what remained was a sterile, gaudy aesthetic, like something out of Miami Vice, with mirrored mosaic tiles and silver accents.

I remember telling the estate agent, "We know how to fix this house and restore its charm, character, and soul—primarily by bringing back the wood!"

Over the past two years, we’ve embarked on numerous “de-blinging” projects, but the most transformative was the staircase in the entry foyer. The original timber stair treads had been painted with silver car paint, and the metal frame was cross-hatched in the same silver. It was a hideous sight and an enormous restoration challenge.

We removed all the stair treads and took them to Darren at Revive Timber in Doonan for sanding and refinishing.

To our surprise and delight, we discovered that the stairs were made from stunning blackbutt timber!

Darren recommended using Whittle Waxes products, which turned out to be the perfect solution. The treads and banister rails were treated with Evolution Hardwax Oil Matte + 10% Raw Light, followed by a light sanding and a final coat of Evolution Hardwax Oil Matte.

While Darren worked on the wood, we sanded and repainted the metal frame from silver to alabaster white, allowing the natural beauty of the timber treads to really stand out.

The result is nothing short of amazing. Our staircase now has the warmth and character we envisioned, and we couldn’t be happier with the transformation.

Whittle Waxes products played a crucial role in restoring the soul of our home, and we highly recommend them.
