FAQ's - Frequently asked questions

Longevity/Wear & Tear
Does It Scratch?
YES . Any timber floor can scratch. However it does have a hard surface and simple preventative measures will keep your floor looking good.
By keeping the floor clean with daily sweeping and weekly vacuuming you will reduce the damage to the floor enormously. It is the grit which is walked in on shoes, children and pets which is the downfall of any floor coating, remove it and you reduce the scratches. Mats at all the entrances will help in keeping the dirt out, service your mats, give them a good shake every now and then, this will maintain their efficiency.
Furniture is the main culprit in floor damage, either through inadequate protectors fitted to the legs or large items getting dragged across the floor i.e. Piano, fridge, dish washer etc. If you need to move a piece of furniture that you are unable to lift, place a blanket on the floor, lay a piece of plywood on the blanket, place the item of furniture on the plywood, Now drag the ply wood over the blanket, leaving the blanket stationary on the floor.

Will It Discolour?
NO. However, timber will change colour with age and excessive sunlight.
Timber tends to darken with age through a process of oxidation. This is evident when a rug is moved and the outline can be seen in the floor. This is not due to the coating discolouring , and cannot be prevented by the coating. If possible make it a habit to occasionally remove the rug for a period of time, or move it to one side, this will reduce the difference in colour between the covered and uncovered potions of the floor. >Will It Flake, Blister or Peel?
NO . One of the biggest advantages of using wax is that it is absorbed by the wood and does not form a surface skin.
New floors are particularly prone to seasonal movements, this is totally acceptable and to be expected, some timber species are more stable than others. Over time the seasonal movement will reduce. Waxes are one of the only coatings that are able to accommodate movement between adjacent boards as there is no skin to fracture.
The wood is able to breathe and move naturally, therefore, correctly applied, the wax will not flake, blister or peel.

How Long Will It Last Before It Needs Replenishing?
This depends on the usage of the floor and how well it is kept clean. Floors with a low sheen level will look better than gloss floors for much longer as they don’t show up high traffic areas. Aesthetically matt or satin floors are more appealing, and are easier to maintain as they don’t show the dirt as much , are easier to repair and will give longer life before refurbishment.
Using a simple maintenance plan will give you a good-looking floor for many years.
Remember certain marks are spot repairable and even if you do need to replenish your floor it does not need to be completely re-sanded.

Will Treatex accommodate movement between boards?
Yes, board movement is a fact of nature, non skin build products are the only products that will successfully accommodate this movement.

Maintenance & Repair
Is It Easy To Maintain?

YES. Simply keep it swept or vacuumed. Periodically wash the floor with our cleaning product, particularly in areas of high traffic.
The advantage is that wax floors can be spot repaired easily and most scuffs, marks and light surface scratches will improve or disappear. (Please see spot repair below)

Is there a build up of wax with the Floor care products?
No, the amount of wax in the floor care is negligible; to minimise the accumulation of product over time.

Can I spot repair my floor?
The
industry understanding of spot repearability is as follows. If the application of more product results in a satisfactory repair this is referred to as spot repairable. This may include the removal of a stain or scuff mark, or the replenishment of a larger area, for instance in front of the sink. No repair will be invisible; this is because the area repaired will have a fresh coat of wax compared to the adjacent area which might be a couple of years old. If this is a concern you might want to have the entire room lightly sanded and recoated. Spot repair would include those repairs that the home owner might consider attempting. However if the repair requires sanding or board replacement to remove a scratch dent or gouge, all classified as mechanical damage, it is no longer spot repairable. This work is best left to the professional.

How long before I need to recoat?
This depends entirely on the maintenance and use of your floor. Some areas will wear quicker than others, different families with identical floors will have a different life span from their floors.

Will a repair be visible?
Yes, simply because the area repaired will have a fresh coat of wax, compared to the original coat which might be 2 years old.

Uses
Is it Ok to use Treatex in wet areas?
Treatex Hardwax Oil is perfect for wet areas as the wax penetrates the timber to render it water resistant. Take care as the floor when wet may be slippery, try not to leave wet towels or mats on the floor and mop up any standing water.

Can Treatex be used on other timber surfaces?
Yes, all interior timber surfaces will coat beautifully with Treatex, including doors, architraves, skirting boards, windows, benchtops and furniture.

Can I coat concrete with Treatex?
Yes, as long as the surface is porous, some mechanically floated cement floors are very smooth and hard reducing the ability of the product to penetrate. Ground concrete tends to coat better as the surface is more open, coverage rates are very difficult to estimate. Treatex is primarily a timber finish and we would recommend you tried a small area first.

Applications

Are there any timbers that are more difficult to coat than others?
The beauty of timber is that all species are unique and will have their own characteristics. Individual boards within a floor will coat differently, giving your floor a unique look which is further enhanced by using a penetrating finish
like Treatex.

How do I apply the colours?
Colours are applied using the direct method, either applying the product with a cloth or squeegee, then wiping off all the excess.

Why are the colours not like on the brochure?
The photos on the brochure are representative only. Different timber takes colour differently, some will look darker, some lighter, we advise do a sample area first.

Can I add colour to the top coat?
Yes a little colour in the top coat will help darken the finish.

If I stain the floor with another stain will Treatex still work?
Treatex can be applied to an already stained floor, solvent based stain, proof tints and even Black Japan, as long as the stain remains porous, again please try a small area first.

How long will the product last in an open tin?
Treatex will skin over in an open tin, remove the skin, stir well and use as normal.

Can I put another coat on without cutting back?
You will need to cut the floor back between coats as this will remove any debris caught in the 1 st coat and key the surface ensuring maximum adhesion of the following coat.

What coverage can I expect?
A 5ltr tin will do 50 sqm with 2 coats, depending on application quantity and wood type.

Can I spray the product?
Yes it can be thinned using a conventional thinner and sprays successfully.

Can I use solvent to clean up rather than White spirit?
Yes you will not have any problems, we know of floor sanders who use the same roller for Treatex and Solvent based Poly-urethane.
